And here follows the most shattering line in the whole series this side of "We sort too soon":

"I see what Bellatrix meant," said Harry, the blood thundering through his brain, "you need to really mean it."

Holy shit - I think this right here warrants a moment of appalled silence.

OK - now I can go on. *I* think it must be some sinister hallucinogenic substance thundering through his brain, because he's clearly lost his cotton-picking mind. Six GD books assuring us over and over that even Rowling's irrational, ethically confused, dimwitted wizards can at least recognize and condemn the idea of atrocity and now torture is just a moment of youthful arrogance?? Just a little mistake??? OMG - they are Unforgivable Curses, not Somewhat-Excessive-Curses or Generally-Frowned-On Curses. Isn't "Unforgivable" a term that cannot be qualified, like "pregnant" or "dead" - or like - "evil by definition"? GAH.

Not even dwelling on how outright OOC it is that only two years earlier in his story, Harry, out of his mind w/ rage and grief over a murder, could not summon the genuine hellish cruelty needed to cast this curse. Yet here he can perform it over a mere insult. Why, oh why, couldn't Harry have just punched Carrow (a rare species of Spitting-Death-Eater, no doubt) in the gob and have done with it??

Continuity error. Moral error. Character-arc error. Sanity error. Hell, in a way, it's even a grammatical error. How wrong is this Cruciatus Curse - let me count the ways. This one tiny section, for me, was the absolute nadir of the entire series - I'm still foaming at the mouth about it after all this time (as can be plainly seen - sigh).

On the other hand - LOL - great spork! I think I'll be seeing Snape as the Roadrunner chirping "meep meep" as he crashes out the window for a good long time.
