Hermione got hit with a memory charm since the previous chapter, obviously, and doesn't remember casting memory charms. Which, you realize, means that her parents are never coming back from Australia. Sorry Grangers. Have a nice life!
Actually, it's worse than that. Here's a kid asking Rowling about that, and here's her answer (http://www.ronandhermione.net/JK_Rowling_Interviews):
Laura Trego: Did hermione really put a memory charm on her parents she says she did but then about 50 pages later tells ron shes never done a memory charm
J.K. Rowling: They are two different charms. She has not wiped her parents’ memories (as she later does to Dolohov and Rowle); she has bewitched them to make them believe that they are different people.
***
Now, that's utter bollocks.
First of all, I cite Gilderoy Lockhart in CoS. He does all kinds of memory modification spells. He says in both the book and the movie that he's always been rather good at--say it with me, class--MEMORY CHARMS.
Therefore, according to Rowling's own canon, a memory modification charm IS a Memory Charm.
Second, at the end of this chapter, Rowle is being tortured by Voldemort's proxy, Draco, as Voldemort pontificates. It's mentioned in the text that Rowle came back and told Voldemort that Harry, at least, had escaped.
Therefore, Rowle's memory was NOT wiped. It couldn't have been completely wiped if he knew who Harry Potter was, who Voldemort was, where his own loyalties lay and where to find Voldemort.
This should stand as proof positive that yes, you can indeed screw up your own canon. Because this is just a cock-up all around.
