According to the Aberforth story, Ariana came in AFTER they started dueling. I suppose we can think Albus performed a Memory Charm on Aberforth, but the thing is... why didn't Albus go with Gellert if he killed Ariana? So the DD-intentionally-killing-Ariana approach doesn't quite work for me. :\
