He could have just cast the Impervious spell on himself and stayed warm and dry while he plunged into the icy waters of Excalibur Pond.

This is the problem with creating a world without magical rules. If the hero gets into a crisis, there's no earthly reason for him NOT to cast a spell that would prevent him from suffering.
